NGC Registry Featured Set: Peter Chase Collection

Posted on 11/9/2021

This month’s featured set belongs to Salonica.

Last month, we stayed home in the US to celebrate a remarkable Peace Dollar set. This month, we are travelling internationally and flying over The Big Pond to Greece. We are excited to feature the extensive and unique Peter Chase Collection, a John Kapodistrias 1828-1831 set, by Salonica.

Salonica just joined the NGC Registry this past summer, and he has already made his presence well-known to both novice and experienced collectors alike. Salonica has assembled several sets in various categories, but this particular Greek collection shines above the rest. Laden with NGC Top Pop coins, including this striking NGC Pop 1 coin, a 1828 Greece 1P graded NGC MS 65 PL, this set has been compiled with careful planning and attention to detail.

Salonica boasts an impressive 91% completion, 239 coins thus far, with his most recent addition just about a week ago. Amazingly, he has taken the time to upload crisp images for every single coin. Be sure to check out his gallery here for a comprehensive view of the numerous varieties typical of this time period. Of Greek heritage himself, this collector includes an interesting and anecdotal set introduction, with references to the symbolism of the coins:

“The phoenix that is above the flames and adorns the front of all coins symbolizes Greece that is reborn from its ashes. Above the phoenix are the rays, which represent the blessing of the Holy Spirit, in reborn Greece. Below the phoenix are the letters ¸αωκα′. These are the Greek letters — symbols that declare 1821, the year of the beginning of the Greek Revolution.”

Thank you, Salonica, for joining the NGC collecting community and for sharing your unique collections with us. We look forward to your future updates in this set and in others!

Buckle up, the 2021-2022 NGC Registry Awards are fast approaching! You may be chosen!

Would you like your set to be featured in a future article? 100% completion in a set is not always feasible. Perhaps, we will choose someone whose set has a personal story behind it or some interesting historical facts. We are looking for those sets where someone has taken the time to make the set unique and a reflection of his/her personal collecting style. It may be your set! Stay tuned.
