I have always been a fan of Greek history and culture. A part of it are the first coins that were minted after its liberation in 1828 and during the government of Ioannis Kapodistrias (1828-1931).
There is a lot of information that is interesting about the coins of this period.
• The phoenix that is above the flames and adorns the front of all coins symbolizes Greece that is reborn from its ashes. Above the phoenix are the rays, which represent the blessing of the Holy Spirit, in reborn Greece. Below the phoenix are the letters ¸αωκα′. These are the Greek letters-symbols that declare 1821, the year of the beginning of the Greek Revolution.
• On the back the wreath consists of a laurel branch on the left and an olive branch on the right. The laurel branch historically symbolizes triumph and victory while the olive branch symbolizes peace.
• There are many different varieties of the coins of the same value and year and each one’s rarity varies. These arose due to late die states and due to the fact that more than one minting machine were used to strike coins.
My first contact with these coins was in 1975, reading the book Die Münzen des I. A. Kapodistrias in which a first attempt was made to introduce them. In the process I received stimuli from other sources and from other collectors and studies until I took the decision to proceed with their collection and recording.
