Label options may have changed. Please refer to the Special Labels page for current availability. The new coins — and NGC’s attractive certification options — celebrate the 100th anniversary of the last Morgan Dollar and the first Peace Dollar. Special submission instructions must be followed. See the “Submission Instructions” section of this article.

In 1921, the US Mint retired the Morgan Dollar — a storied coin of the Old West — and introduced the Peace Dollar — a symbol of America becoming a world power. Now, to commemorate the 100th anniversary of this significant transition, the US Mint is releasing 2021 Morgan and Peace Dollars. Demand was intense for this extraordinary opportunity to own a modern-day issue of these iconic and incredibly popular American coins.

Numismatic Guaranty Company™ (NGC®) is offering special label and designation options to celebrate the return of the Morgan and Peace Dollars, which were available for preorder in May and August. The coins began shipping in October.

The 2021 issues include five versions of the Morgan Dollar to commemorate the mints that produced the original coins. One has no mintmark to recognize the historic Philadelphia Mint, which did not use a mintmark. Another features the “S” mintmark of the San Francisco Mint, while the third features the “D” mintmark of the Denver Mint. The former mints in New Orleans and Carson City are celebrated with privy marks, which are raised ovals with the original “O” or “CC” mintmark.

The 2021 Peace Dollar has no mintmark and is being produced by the Philadelphia Mint. Its dazzling high relief appearance is in honor of the original coin, which was struck in high relief.

The 100th anniversary of the transition from the Morgan Dollar to the Peace Dollar in 1921 is an important event in numismatics, as these are among the most prominent and beloved American coin series. Called the “King of 19th Century Coins,” the Morgan Dollar was minted from 1878 to 1904 and again, unexpectedly, in 1921. The Peace Dollar, minted from 1921 to 1935, symbolizes the country’s modernization in the 20th century in addition to commemorating the peace achieved after World War I.

“For many people, the Morgan and Peace Dollars helped to spark the pursuit of coin collecting,” commented Mark Salzberg, NGC Chairman and Grading Finalizer. “The release of new Morgan and Peace Dollars in 2021 will appeal to virtually all collectors and inspire a new generation of numismatists.”

Available for all submitters of 2021 Morgan and Peace Dollars, the NGC 1921 Morgan Dollar Centennial label and the NGC Peace Dollar Centennial label convey the industry and optimism of the American spirt embodied by these coins. The labels are also offered for bulk submissions of 1921 Morgan and Peace Dollars, and oversize versions are available for bulk submissions of multi-coin sets.
