NGC-graded Gold Pattern and Una and the Lion Each Expected to Realize Six Figures in SINCONA Sale

Posted on 5/12/2022

Hundreds of NGC-certified coins are being offered in Part 2 of an auction featuring spectacular British rarities.

More than 400 rare coins from a phenomenal collection certified by Numismatic Guaranty Company™ (NGC®) are being offered this month by SINCONA. The auction includes gold rarities spanning nearly 600 years of history, including a rare Gold Pattern that was generating spirited bidding in the days before the auction. SINCONA Auction 75: SINCONA British Collection Part 2 is scheduled for May 16, 2022.

A top offering in the sale is a Great Britain 1768 Gold Pattern 2 Guinea graded NGC PF 65★ Cameo (lot 243). From early in the reign of King George III, this coin was one of only a tiny number struck; smaller denominations of gold coins were desperately needed at the time, so these were never intended for wide usage.

Not only does this coin stand alone as the highest graded of the six in the NGC Census, it also earned NGC's coveted Star Designation for exceptional eye appeal. Recent auction results suggest it is likely to realize several hundred thousand dollars.

It will get some lively competition from a coin struck in honor of Queen Victoria, a granddaughter of King George III. A Great Britain 1839 Una and the Lion 5 Sovereign graded NGC PF 62+ Cameo (lot 339) had already drawn a bid at its starting price of CHF 150,000 (about $150,000) several days before the auction.

The obverse of the coin shows the young queen, while the reverse displays a figure representing her guiding a lion, a symbol of England. The scene is inspired by one involving Lady Una in Edmund Spenser's epic poem "The Faerie Queene."

NGC is showcasing high-resolution images of the coins that have been offered so far from this unparalleled collection in an image gallery on its website. The gallery includes the coins from Part 1 of the auction, which realized almost $9 million in November 2021. To explore the gallery, click here.

To enhance these stunning coins, NGC encapsulated them with a special label that combines the British flag and the Matterhorn, a Swiss mountain that represents the highest level of achievement. SINCONA is headquartered in Zurich.
