Noting the popularity of the State Quarter series, Congress authorized a similar program for the circulating quarter dollar which honors National Parks, National Forests and other "sites of natural or historical significance." All 50 states will be featured, as well as the additional members of the USA included in the 2009 quarter program.
The obverse of each coin features the bust of George Washington seen on the State Quarters series but with the portrait restored to that created by John Flanagan in 1932. The reverse is reserved for the commemorative theme.
