I put this set together as a tribute to my mother as this is her year of birth. I am very proud of this set that I have assembled in her honor and have provided high quality images and full descriptions of each coin. This set is the only 1940 mint set that can make that claim at the close of the 2020 registry.
My mom is the impossible combination of strength and compassion all in the same delicate package. Mothers often have a very special place in our hearts, many times the family revolves around the mother. Mothers have the ability to soothe and make things all better with the greatest ease. This poem sums up how I feel about my mother.

My mothers year of birth is marked by the unprecedented third term election of President Roosevelt. After surviving the depression and subsequent recession of 1937 president Roosevelt's new deal has the country moving forward and the American public looking forward with hope and enthusiasm. However at the same time there is a palpable nervousness as America watches WWII envelop Europe. America instituted the first peacetime draft in 1940, called the selective training and service act. President Roosevelt himself called the very first draft number, number 158 in October 1940. Much of the new during 1940 was dominated by the overseas war and the growing worry that the United States would be pulled into the war.
But amidst all that was happening in Europe there were still some important events happening at home. Tensions between white and black races were heating up as integration measures were introduced. This calmed somewhat once the U.S. entered WWII the following year but riots erupted in the years following the war in cites like Chicago, Detroit, and Los Angeles. America named as the first African American General Benjamin O. Davis, Sr. And the first issues of the Captain America comics hit the shelves in December 1940.
A number of famous people were born in 1940, I found these to be of interest to me. Mario Andretti, Bruce Lee, Chuck Norris, and Smokey Robinson.
New coins for 2021:
1) The first new coin I have added for 2021 is a replacement for my 1940-S Mercury Dime. The coin previously in the set was a PCGS MS65FB coin in a rattler holder with a CAC gold bean. I must say that this coin is stunning and I think would be an easy MS67FB if cracked out. However I love old holders and I just do not want to crack this coin out. So enter the new coin for this slot an NGC MS67FB example. This coin is super flashy with a significant amount of die polish lines on both the obverse and reverse. The bridge of the nose is missing due to the dies having been lapped; more than once I would suspect.
2) My second coin added to this set is an upgrade to my 1940 Jefferson nickel. The old example was a super eye appealing coin but did not have full steps which is a nice upgrade in points. This new piece is very nice with a flashy completely white look. The reverse die looks to have been an early die strike with 5 full steps and just a whisper away from the sixth. The obverse die is a later state die that exhibits some die fatigue and there are some die lapping marks in the field from a clash.
3) The third new coin for this set in 2021 is an upgrade for my 1940 D Mercury dime slot. My new MS68FB coin is a very stunning coin with a bright proof like obverse and a slightly more frosty reverse. The obverse shows some die polish lines however all the design elements are sharp, full, and standing tall. This leads me to think that this was a very early strike from this obverse die. I have noticed that often when Mercury dime obverse dies have been lapped (polished) to remove a clash that the bust will not be as tall. This is often seen where the bridge of the nose loses some depth and seems to be sinking into the field.
4) the fourth change to the set for 2021 is the upgrade to my 1940-S Washington quarter. The previous coin was a PCGS MS66 CAC which was a stunning coin and one that I suspect will find its way into a 67 holder soon. But this new coin is equally beautiful and is a wonderful addition to the set.
5) The fifth addition to this set for 2021 is also an upgrade, this time to the Philadelphia half dollar. This coin is a beast with a hammered strike and eye appeal to spare. A real gem that helped to bolster the set points and really bring the look and quality of the set up another notch.
6) The sixth and final change to this set for 2021 is an upgrade for the Philadelphia dime. The new MS67+ is a nice point boost and while a very visually appealing addition I actually prefer the look of the under grade coin.
