This is an absolutely beautiful collection celebrating my maternal family heritage! One of my favorites!
The series actually runs from 1983 to 2016, with standard and piedfort editions of each one. No piedforts were minted in 1990, 1991, and 1992. No silver pounds were minted in 2012.
Each coin is 92.5% Silver with the balance being Copper. They are 22.5mm in diameter. The standard coin weighs 9.5g; the pieforts about 19g. The standard coin is over 3mm thick and the piedforts are about double that! The piedforts are so thick that they don't fit in a standard NGC slab. This has created a minor storage problem for me in that they don't fit in my NGC slab storage boxes with the rest of the collection . . .
Through the series, the obverse presents one of five different portraits of Queen Elizabeth. Along with the portrait is the inscription ELIZABETH II D G REG F D, which means 'Elizabeth II, by the grace of God, Queen and Defender of the Faith.'
The reverses vary from year to year and feature something that is representative of one or all parts of Great Britain - - it might be a famous landmark, a national symbol, or national herarldry. The history revealed on the reverses is fascinating!
The edge on most of the coins is reeded and there are no less than nine different inscriptions etched deep into them.
In addition to the coins listed here, I have nearly completed collecting all the Piedforts as well and the rest of the series from 2012 to the "Last Round Pound" of 2016. I have yet to get them certified.
In my Chase's Misc Silver custom set, I have a silver 2011 MS69 coin from the series. There is no slot for it here.Read more...
Celebrating the United Kingdom’s series of one-pound coins struck since 1983, this set features proofs of both the regular and piedfort editions. Dedicated to the owner’s maternal family heritage, it is still a work in progress, yet what is already present is absolutely wonderful. Each coin is nicely illustrated and accompanied by brief but interesting commentary. Standout entries include 1990 Welsh Leek, 2001 North Ireland, 2006 Egyptian Arch Bridge, 2008 Royal Shield and 2009 Royal Shield (all certified as NGC PF-69 Ultra Cameo).
