MS Lincolns of Merit
It was my Father that suggested I take a closer look at the Lincoln cent coin and he gets credit for inspiring this collection. I became charmed by the little coins intricate portrait, Art Nouveau lettering and symplistic layout. To me it is a perfect composition in design with exposed fields where narry a hairline or hit can hide, contrasted by areas of high detail that is fantastic when struck full. I have directed almost all my coin collecting focus into finding Lincoln cents that have killer eye appeal, full surviving strike, and deep wicked mint luster. I want to build one of the worlds finest most interesting short sets of early date Lincoln cents and I am enjoying the process. The target grade for the set is MS 65 in the BN-RB color designation with a few RD designations sprinkled in on some common dates. What a truely great grade the 65 BN is. It seems reserved for above average coins that strike a chord that overlooks their loss of mint red. As I get closer to completing (completed June 1st 2012) this set, I can only reflect on what has been an enjoyable "Adventure in Numismatics". I would not be this far without the help of several listed dealers and fellow collector networks. Especially my close friend Lou A. who took me under his wing and lets me volunteer at his coin shop Dakota Coin as an apprentice. There I feel like I can learn as well as help other local collectors build their collections. Special thanks to ANA Summer Seminar instructors Jerry Bobby and Tom Hallenbeck who were instrumental in teaching general grading, surface quality recognition and influencing advanced collecting strategies.
