The Proof Trade Dollar was intended for collectors and all were struck at the Philadelphia mint. From 1873 to 1883, Proofs were sold to the public. "Proof only" coinage was sold from 1878 to 1883. Ten 1884 and five 1885 Proof strikes are known to exist, but alas, neither is contained in this collection.
The eleven Proof entries in the Jon Lorenzo Proof Trade Dollar Collection are all Gem examples with the exception of the 1877 Proof 64 Ultra Cameo. I could not part with it just to upgrade to a Gem. There is also quite a variety ranging from blast white cameos to multi-colored toned pieces. While the set has two Proof 67's and one Proof 66* (star designation), the toughest to find in decent Gem condition was the 1873.
This set has an unweighted average grade of 65.5 on the 1-70 Sheldon Scale.
