Lincoln Memorial Cents Proof Set
THE STORY:
This set is an afterthought set. I have always had a fascination with pennies particularly the bright, shiny, copper pennies. As I began to explore the world of graded coin sets and update my album set of pennies, it only seemed natural to build a set of proof pennies. It seemed somewhat impractical to pursue a complete set of all proof pennies (1909 to present). The cost alone of grades I find acceptable would make this set an impossible set for me to complete. And while, I started building a State Quarter PF70 set, the cost of a Memorial Cent PF70 set would also prove daunting and expensive but possible. Because I enjoy the act of collecting and the reward of letting my eyes wander over my collecting victories, I quickly decided that this set would be a PF69 set (or the best I could afford) with the odd PF70 penny when I could acquire it at a deep discount to book value.
14 January 2010 – Addendum
The more I work with this set the more I realize that this set is a reflection of my life. I was born in 1959; interestingly enough on the anniversary of the day Lincoln was shot. While the pennies themselves have changed very little over the last 50 years, each year will hold some significance for my life. As I add each year new year to the set, I will explore the history of that year, mine and the world’s, and the impact it has had on my life. This set is definitely more about the story rather than the coins.
18 June 2011 – Addendum
It looks like this is the summer I can get everything in this set caught up, photos and commentary. I changed the name of the set to “Making Cents of My Life” which seems to fit the circumstances. The real challenge for the foreseeable future will to get the early years at reasonable prices in high grades. Currently, I have a run of all of the years from 1990 to the present. At this point I am most pleased to have 3 PF70UC coins in the set but the real jewel in the crown is the 1976S PF69UC which is a top pop.
