The American Buffalo One Ounce Gold Proof Coin is the collector's version of the official United States Mint American Buffalo Gold Bullion Coin. The obverse and reverse designs are based on the original 1913 Type I Buffalo nickel by James Earle Fraser.
The United States Mint produces proof versions of $50 American Gold Buffalo coins for collectors. These 1 Oz Gold Buffalo Proof Coins undergo a specialized minting process, which begins by manually feeding burnished coin blanks into presses fitted with special dies. The coin is struck multiple times so the softly frosted, yet detailed images seem to float above a mirror-like field. After scrutiny by white gloved inspectors, each American Gold Buffalo is sealed in a protective plastic capsule and mounted in a handsome satin-lined velvet presentation case with its own official Certificate of Authenticity.
Each 1 Oz Gold Buffalo Proof coin contains the following specifications - Diameter: 32.70 mm; Fineness: .9999 fine gold; Weight: 1.0001 troy ounces; Thickness: 2.95 mm; with the edge of each coin is reeded. For collectible offerings, the “W” mint mark appears on the obverse of the coin to the left of the portrait. Bullion coins do not have a mint mark.
The gold contained in Gold Buffalo coins is derived from newly mined domestic sources and all coins are official legal tender. Each coin contains one ounce of .9999 fine, 24-karat gold and is presented in an elegant hardwood box with a Certificate of Authenticity signed by the Director of the United States Mint.
In 2006, the 1 ounce $50 Gold Buffalo was released and became an instant classic. The tradition continues and these $50 Gold Proof coins are an excellent way to invest in 24-karat gold with content and purity guaranteed by the United States Government!
In 2008 the US Mint indicated an expansion of the program, to include Buffalo gold coins in fractional sizes. These fractional size coins ($5, $10 & $25) Proof Buffalo coins are beautiful additions to any collection and are listed elsewhere in my Buffalo coin collection.
In 2013 we celebrate the centennial anniversary of one of the United States Mint’s most beloved designs – the American Buffalo. Designed by James Earle Fraser, a student of the legendary sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens, the American Buffalo design was first featured on the Type I Buffalo (or Indian Head) nickel in 1913. This legendary design remained in use on the nickel for 25 years. The design was given new life when it was used on the American Buffalo One Ounce Gold Proof Coin in 2006, the first 24-karat gold proof coin ever struck by the United States Mint.
We celebrate this 100-year milestone with an American Buffalo One Ounce Gold Reverse Proof Coin. Reversing the mirror-like background finish of the traditional proof coin and applying it instead to the design elements of the coin achieves a magnificent visual contrast against the uniquely frosted background. This anniversary edition captures the beauty of coin design and the modernization of coin production over the last 100 years in one magnificent showpiece.
