PRELUDE: I'm proudest of the coins I've found in simple pocket change. Granted, "pocket change" might mean buried in a box of 2500 dimes I withdraw from my local bank branch ... but, for a grown-up, this is the equivalent of a little boy cherrypicking his dad's piggy bank for wheat cents.
REALITY CHECK: Finding registry-quality dimes in circulation, for me, has been REALLY difficult. I think the only coin in this registry from pocket change is my 2000-D MS67FT.
THAT'S NOT THE WHOLE STORY. Okay, I have had luck finding registry-quality coins in "pocket change" ... if the rolls from the bank were original bank-wrapped rolls. For my 2010-D MS68FT, thank you, N.F. String. For my 2013-D and 2014-D raw dimes waiting to be graded, thank you N.F. String.
FOR ALL THE OTHERS: Bulk lots and trades. When Jason Colinger sold off his collection a few years ago, I acquired about seven dates from his registry - the 1974 MS67 PCGS is about the most auspicious from that private purchase. I got a bunch of "fillers" in a multi-item EBay lot several years ago. And most recently, I traded my duplicate 2010-D MS68FT to Six Mile Rick for a pile of sub-top-pop coins, including over a dozen in this registry.
MINT SETS? I don't cherrypick mint sets like other collectors (such as Six Mile Rick). But I broke up my own mint sets to submit the 1970-D MS66FT and 2011-P MS66FT for grading.
CONCLUSION. Clad dimes are still underrated. I haven't bought a coin over face value since 2012. I'm selling off, slowly, my entire coin collection, raw and slabbed. But the dimes might be the last to go.
