The modern Jefferson run excites me for two reasons - variety of strikes, and acquisition methods.
ON STRIKE VARIETIES ... I equate design tinkers and the degree of relief with aesthetics of the times. The later 1990's and earlier 2000's were all about cleanliness and conformity - thus, a bunch of boring flat MS67 or 68 top pops. The 1970's were a mess with some truly gorgeous moments arising out of the muck. Any FS coin from that decade should be marked "NFS"! The Cyndi Lauper era of the 1980's were all about loops and bubbles - search enough rolls and you too will know an '80's vintage nickel right away ...
AND ON ACQUISITIONS ... This collection, more than any set I own, comes from many sources and methods.
I initially slabbed most of the collection myself, as follows:
SLABBED DIRECTLY FROM CIRCULATION: 1965, 1972, 1972-D, 1978, 2005-D Bison
SLABBED FROM ACQUIRED RAW COIN: 1966, 1977, 2000-D
SLABBED FROM MINT SET: 1970-D, 2011-D
SLABBED FORM OBW: 1973, 2005-P Bison, 2005-D Ocean View
SLABBED FROM MINT BAG: 2004-P Keelboat, 2005-P Ocean View
Some coins I acquired already slabbed, as follows:
AUCTION, MINIMUM BID: 1971, 1971-D, 1973-D, 1974-D, 1996-P, 2004-D Handshake, 2006-D
COMPETITIVE AUCTION: 1991-P, 1995-D, 1996-D, 2010-P, 2010-D
PRIVATE SALE (via EBay): 1976-D, 2004-D Keelboat
TRADE: 2008-P
SATINS: an embarassment, I disagree with collecting coins as pretty and common as proofs as part of a biz strike set ... but I have bought a few for Buy-It-Now on EBay.
What does ALL this prove? (1) Any collector, with enough effort, can assemble a respectable modern MS set with limited means. (2) A seller like EBay's datentype readily sells top pop in $0.99 auction, so if you're willing to spend over $100, you don't have to spend Buy-It-Now money for a top pop. (3) Crack open an older OBW and you might luck into a top pop, like my 1973 MS67 6FS. (4) Mint sets are not great sources of top pops, unless you cherrypick hundreds of them. (5) If you get enough rolls or boxes at your bank, eventually you'll get lucky, like I did with 1965.
