The American Buffalo 24-Karat Gold Coins are the first .9999 fine 24-karat gold coins ever struck by the United States Mint! Production of these prized coins was authorized by Congress and passed into law on December 22, 2005.
The American Buffalo, also know as the Gold Buffalo, is a 24-karat gold bullion coin first offered for sale by the United States Mint on June 22, 2006, and became available for shipment beginning on July 13, 2006. The coin follows the greatly admired design of the Indian Head nickel and has gained its nickname from the American Bison on the reverse side of the design. This was the first time ever that the United States Government has minted a pure (.9999) 24-karat gold coins for the public.
The American Buffalo Gold coin's obverse and reverse design features were originally prepared by James Earle Fraser, a one time student of famous sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens. That popular coin, known as the Indian Head, or Buffalo nickel was first struck in 1913 and showcases the beauty of the early American West. The Native American depiction on the coins obverse is said to be based on three different American Indians. Two of those who modeled for Fraser were Chief Iron Tail of the Sioux and Chief Two Moons of the Cheyenne. Many others have claimed to have had a sitting with Fraser for this design, but documentation was never found to positively identify another individual. It is believed that the bison pictured on the coin's reverse was modeled after Black Diamond, a famous attraction at the Zoological Gardens in New York.
The composition of the 1 Oz Gold Buffalo coin is 24 karat (.9999) fine gold. Each 1 oz coin contains its stated weight in pure gold. The weight, content, and purity of each coin is guaranteed by the United States Government. The gold contained in Gold Buffalo coins is derived from newly mined domestic sources and all coins are official legal tender.
Each 1 Oz Gold Buffalo coin contains the following specifications - Diameter: 32.70 mm; Fineness: .9999 fine gold; Weight: 1.0001 troy ounces; Thickness: 2.95 mm; with the edge of each coin is reeded. For collectible offerings, the “W” mint mark appears on the obverse of the coin to the left of the portrait. Bullion coins do not have a mint mark.
In 2006, the 1 ounce $50 Gold Buffalo was released and became an instant classic. The tradition continues and these $50 gold coins are an excellent way to invest in 24-karat gold with content and purity guaranteed by the United States Government!
In 2008, the US Mint expanded 2008 offerings for the American Gold Buffalo program to include collectible uncirculated coins minted across a full range of denominations. The 2008-W Uncirculated Gold Buffalo coins are struck on specially burnished blanks and carry the “W” mint mark. These were branded collector versions of the coins, distinct from the regular bullion issues.
The 2008-W Uncirculated Gold Buffalo coins product options included individual coins or a complete four coin set, containing one coin of each denomination. The four denominations included the $50 face value one ounce coin, $25 face value one-half ounce coin, $10 face value one-quarter ounce coin, and $5 face value one-tenth ounce coin.
In late 2008, the U.S. Mint announced that all of the Gold Buffalo collectible uncirculated or “burnished” coins would be discontinued. This made the 2008-W Uncirculated Gold Buffalo coins a unique, one year only issue. The circumstances of the coin’s release also contributed to surprisingly low mintages.
In 2013 we celebrate the centennial anniversary of one of the United States Mint’s most beloved designs – the American Buffalo. Designed by James Earle Fraser, a student of the legendary sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens, the American Buffalo design was first featured on the Type I Buffalo (or Indian Head) nickel in 1913. This legendary design remained in use on the nickel for 25 years. The design was given new life when it was used on the American Buffalo One Ounce Gold Proof Coin in 2006, the first 24-karat gold proof coin ever struck by the United States Mint.
We celebrate this 100-year milestone with an American Buffalo One Ounce Gold Reverse Proof Coin. Reversing the mirror-like background finish of the traditional proof coin and applying it instead to the design elements of the coin achieves a magnificent visual contrast against the uniquely frosted background. This anniversary edition captures the beauty of coin design and the modernization of coin production over the last 100 years in one magnificent showpiece.
