This set of half dollars was started in January of 2004 and was completed over two years later. I'm sure I could have completed it a lot sooner, but I tried to buy as close to wholesale as possible. I finally broke down and bought the proof baseball coin for almost $3 over wholesale, in order to complete the set in February of 2006. The most I paid for a half over wholesale is the MS-68 swimming coin, which I paid about $10 above Numismedia Wholesale Ask value. When all was said and done, I paid exactly $925.79 (including postage) for the entire set. When I completed the set in February, the Numismedia Wholesale Ask value was $931. The coins were almost exclusively purchased on eBay.
I think its interesting to note that during the entire time I was compiling the set, no new commemorative half dollars were issued.
Update: As of January, 2022, I still own the lowest ranked complete set on this registry (currently #46)... and I'm okay with that.
