A few coins that are still in my collection as a basis to start rebuilding this registry set.
The Mint Set of 1879 still represents an opportunity to assemble a single mint set with several rarities and scarce issues within this single year's mintage.
Both nickel coin issues are in descendancy for mintage numbers. Silver coin mintages were at their lowest point in the series for most mintages in the late 1870's. The gold issues are scarce in MS grades and all but the "P" & "S" mint coins are rare in any grade above VF.
The corruption during the Grant administration and the throttling of hard money mintage as a result have provided many collecting oportunities within the period of US coinage history.
