The Coming To Lifeâ„¢ Buffalo Nickel transforms one of the most iconic designs in American coinage into a bold sculptural release. With a limited mintage of just 5,000, this massive 5 oz .999 fine silver coin brings James Earle Fraser's legendary 1913 Buffalo Nickel to life in vivid 3D.
Produced by the Xceptional Mintâ„¢, the Coming To Life series pairs leading numismatic artists with innovative Beyond Reliefâ„¢ technology to reinterpret classic coin designs with extraordinary depth. The sculptural approach allows the intricate textures of Fraser's original artwork to appear with striking realism. The 33 mm depth creates a lifelike presence rarely seen in modern minting.
NGC Certification
Each coin is certified MS70 ANTIQUED by NGC. The antiqued finish gives the silver a subtle aged appearance, revealing more detail. Each coin is also designated Advance Releases with the X-Mint Coming To Life label hand-signed by Michael Gaudioso.
Coin Design
Obverse – The obverse features James Earle Fraser's iconic Native American portrait, first introduced on the Buffalo Nickel in 1913. The powerful profile inspired by several Native American chiefs is sculpted with dramatic depth, highlighting the intricate braids, feathers, and facial details.
Reverse – The reverse depicts the American bison standing atop a mound, enhanced by a textured field inspired by a passing stampede. The massive animal is rendered with striking dimensional detail, giving the impression that the bison rises from the surface.
Beyond Relief Technology
To fully capture the intricacy of the sculpture, conventional minting methods proved insufficient. The Xceptional Mint collaborated with specialists in minting innovation to develop Beyond Relief technology.
This advanced process moves beyond traditional High Relief and Ultra-High Relief techniques, allowing the design to extend dramatically from the surface while preserving sharp detail and structural integrity.
About the Artist
Michael Gaudioso is one of the most respected sculptors and medallic artists in modern numismatics. During his tenure at the United States Mint from 2008 to 2020, he sculpted more than 35 coins and medals, including the reverse of the Type 2 American Silver Eagle.
The Buffalo Nickel
Introduced in 1913, the Buffalo Nickel, also known as the Indian Head Nickel, quickly became one of the most recognizable designs in U.S. coinage. Sculptor James Earle Fraser created the design to capture the spirit of the American West.
The coin pairs a powerful Native American portrait on the obverse with a rugged American bison on the reverse. More than a century later, Fraser's design remains one of the most admired and widely recognized images in American numismatic history.
