The US Proof Liberty Head V Nickel Set is the premium collector's edition of one of America's most iconic five-cent designs, featuring specially struck proof versions from 1883 to 1912 — the full circulation run of Charles Barber's Liberty Head Nickel series. The obverse portrays Lady Liberty in profile wearing a coronet inscribed with "LIBERTY" and adorned with a wreath, while the reverse displays Roman numeral V surrounded by a wreath of wheat, cotton, and corn — America's principal agricultural exports at the time. The series has a famous historical footnote: the original 1883 issues lacked the word "cents" on the reverse, which fraudsters exploited by gold-plating them and passing them off as $5 gold pieces. The Mint quickly added "Cents" below the V in June 1883, creating the No Cents (early 1883) and With Cents varieties — a distinction that matters for both circulation and proof strikes. Proof Liberty Head Nickels were struck at the Philadelphia Mint using polished dies and planchets to achieve that mirror-like field and sharp frosted relief.
