The US Two-Cent Piece PF & MS Set captures one of the shortest-lived and most historically significant denominations in American coinage. Designed by Chief Engraver James Barton Longacre, the Two-Cent Piece was minted from 1864 to 1873 — a mere nine years — and was born out of the Civil War-era coin shortage when small-change denominations vanished from circulation as people hoarded silver and gold. It was also the first US coin to bear the motto "In God We Trust," a detail that carries profound historical weight given when it was introduced. The coin is composed of 95% copper, 5% tin and zinc (bronze), measures 23mm in diameter, and weighs 6.22 grams. The obverse features a simple shield design (reflecting the wartime era), while the reverse shows the denomination within a wreath. A combined Proof and Mint State set includes both circulation strikes (MS) and specially struck proof versions for each year of the series, with 1873 being particularly notable as it was issued only in proof. The Two-Cent Piece was discontinued in 1873 once the coinage crisis subsided and the Three-Cent Nickel filled the small-change gap, making this series a fascinating Civil War relic — a denomination that existed for one specific moment in American history and then disappeared. Collectors value it both as a numismatic series and as a tangible piece of wartime America.
