The US Proof Franklin Half Dollar Set is a prized numismatic collection encompassing the proof strikes of Benjamin Franklin half dollars issued from 1950 through 1963. Unlike the circulation strikes, proof coins were specially struck at the Philadelphia Mint using polished dies and planchets to produce mirror-like fields and frosted design elements—a finish that collectors find especially striking on the Franklin half's detailed portrait of the Founding Father and the Liberty Bell reverse. Proofs were sold as part of each year's annual US Mint Proof Set, and over 15.8 million Franklin proof halves were produced across the series' fourteen-year run. The 1950 Proof Set Franklin half is widely considered the star of that inaugural set, as it was the first year proofs were included in annual Mint sets. Among proof collectors, Cameo and Deep Cameo examples—where the contrast between the mirrored background and frosted relief is particularly dramatic—are especially sought after. Like their circulation counterparts, proof Franklin halves are composed of 90% silver and 10% copper.
