BOOKER T. WASHINGTON was an Old Virginia Boy like myself. When I was living in Roanoke, Va. I would drive past the Booker T. Washington Memorial on my way to the Lake. Booker T. was a hometown boy who did well and went far. History tells us of this man's service, decency & humanity. It is fitting and proper that the man be appropriately honored.
"Modern Library" lists his autobiography, "Up From Slavery," as number 3 on it's list of top 100 non-fiction works of the 20th century. The book, written in 1901, details this man's struggle to better himself through education and hard work. He also labored to inculcate the same values in his fellow man. This man truly was an unusual and extraordinary man. Here is an example of a man who persevered through great difficulties and lived a victorious life without complaining or making excuses.
This coin has a special meaning for me because of these reasons. Another reason this coin is meaningful to me is because of it's Virginia roots. The coin's reverse notes Franklin County, Virginia as the man's birthplace. My family's Virginia roots go way back to before the American Revolution, when the western fringe of Virginia was the American frontier. Being born & raised in Virginia, my Virginia heritage is an important part of who I am. In my collecting interests, I am also a huge fan of NGC STAR coins , PL coins and attractive color toned coins. This commemorative coin checks a lot of boxes for me.
