I debated with myself about the image for this set. I finally narrowed it to the portraits of two men. John Glenn, the astronaut and senator and the guy who appears here in his Walmart hat. John Glenn was a person who controbuted much, was the first American to orbit the earth in the Friendship 7 and a U.S. Senator from Ohio. In the final analysis, Sam Walton, the founder of Walmart won out. Of the two, Sam Walton made the biggest difference in our daily lives. A large percentage of Americans buy almost everything they consume in their local friendly Walmart, and have never been to space and find the Senate to be less trustworthy. The last one is a sad commentary.
Frankly, I don't think Walmart is much of a place, my wife and I have been in a Walmart exactly twice in our married lives (4 decades). However, my distaste for Walmart doesn't minimize its importance for the average American consumer. Walmart has over $680 billion in world wide sales and employs more than 2 million people. 62% of Americans report they regularly buy their groceries in Walmart, dwarfing Albertsons and Krogers. That's alot of coins changing hands!
I started this set on February 8, 2026 after thinking about how to proceed for a week or so.
This was the last set in my project to create a mint set for each year from 1946 to 1964. The years between the 35% silver nickels of 1945 and the last year of the 90% silver dimes, quarters and half dollars, 1964.
