In 1963 the Civil Rights Movement reached a new crescendo. This image is one of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. giving his famous "I have a dream speech" on the Washington Mall in front of 250,000. This speech was given on August 19, 1963. In less than five years MLK would be dead from an assassin's bullet in Memphis, Tennessee. I choose this image because of the almost spiritual nature of it and it's likeness of MLK.
1963 also saw the assassination of John F. Kennedy and the murder of his assassin on national television as Lee Harvey Oswald was gunned down by Jack Ruby.
The first woman was sent into space. The woman was Valentin Tereshkova, a Russian Cosmonaut aboard Vostok 6. We were still trailing in the space race.
1963 was also the next to the last year for 90% silver dimes, quarters and half dollars. The Kennedy assassination also meant that the Franklin Half Dollar's last year was 1963 because it was about to replaced with a Kennedy Half Dollar in 1964 to honor the fallen President.
It was an eventful year deserving of a set, and this set began on February 7, 2026.
