My 1946 Mint Set

This an image of two of the buildings of the United Nations Headquarters in New York City,
between 42nd Street and 48th Street on the East River. The picture is take from the General Assembly Building with your back toward First Avenue and the East River behind the buildings. The stone ediface with the flags in front is the Secretariat Building and the tower with all the glass windows is the Conference Building.
1946 was the year for the creation of the United Nations, and was probably the biggest event of the year. However, this was also the year that gave birth to ENIAC, the first electronic computer, and three tons of it with vacuum tubes and lots of people to maintain it. It was the first step on the road to the age of the computer. Worthy of mention was it was also the year that the NBA was founded and George Orwell published "Animal Farm."
For all of these reasons it seems fitting to have a mint set in this registry. However, there is another reason why I did this. In 1945 the Mint was still striking 35% silver nickels even though 1944 was the last year for steel pennies. From 1946 through 1964 the Mint went back to the copper penny, nickel 5 cent coin, and silver for the dime, quarter and half dollar. That would continue through 1964 when the Mint stopped using silver for circulating coins and started producing clad coins for circulation.
Rather than a custom set, I am going to do a mint set for each of the years from 1946 through 1964 in honor the resumption of the metalurgical resoration of our coinage to its end. These coins are the ones with which I grew up and have associated memories.
