In early 1964, the Kennedy Half Dollar was rushed into production as a grieving nation’s tribute - a silver promise that the memory of a fallen President would remain a tangible part of American life. For everyday Americans in 1964, holding this coin was a way to touch history; it was a memorial that lived in the pocket rather than on a pedestal.
While the series continues as a collector-only issue today, this set focuses primarily on the circulation era (1964–2001)—the decades when these coins fulfilled their mission as a primary workhorse of American currency. Central to this set's philosophy is a focus on pieces that replicate the exact metallurgy of the coins found in active circulation at the time—tracking the transition from 90% silver, to 40% silver cladding, to the standard copper-nickel clad composition. Accordingly, modern-issue Silver Proofs and collector-only precious metal strikes are intentionally omitted, as they represent numismatic products rather than a reflection of true circulating metallurgy.
Very special exceptions are made only for pieces of distinct historical interest to the collection, collateral acquisitions that otherwise have no place (originating from multi-coin sets that satisfied broader numismatic objectives), or select pieces from the Not-Intended-for-Circulation (NIFC) era produced after 2001 that have presented themselves as uniquely strong value propositions.
By concluding the core collection in 2001—the final year these coins were struck for general circulation—while acknowledging select exceptional, value-driven later pieces, this set preserves the true legacy of the Kennedy Half Dollar as a daily workhorse of the American economy.
