The gentleman to the left is General of the Army (five stars) Omar Nelson Bradley. In 1948 General Bradley succeeded Dwight Eisenhower as the Chief of Staff of the United States Army.
Omar Bradley used to do intergral calculus to entertain himself in those prolonged periods of boredom which every soldier endoured. I like mathematics, but I can't say that it was ever a hobby of mine like General Bradley. General Bradley was called by war correspondent Ernie Pyle (for whom the Journalism School at Indiana Univeristy is named) 'a soldier's soldier."
Omar Bradley wrote an autobiography which was pulbished in 1951 by Henry Holt and Company entitled "A Soldier's Story." which is a very good read if you like history. I recommend it over the other title on his life.
1948 was a rather remarkable year in many respects. Among the mile stones of that year were Ghandi's assassination, the organization of NASCAR, and the election of Harry Truman to a second term as U.S. President. Most of us, my age, remember Trum holding up the newpaper with the Headline "Dewey Defeats Truman" which turned-out not to be true.
1948 also appears to be the year in which I was concieved, albeit, we normally don't celelrate such events. That one also stumped me, the pain and suffering of child-birth strikes me as an event most mothers would which to foreget, while the conception was much a much more pleasureable event and worthy of memorialization, well you get the idea.
