One of the five coins that comprise this set is the Lincoln, Wheat Reverse penny. The image to the left is that reverse with the two wheat ears. 1958 was the last year for that reverse. The next year, 1959, would sport the Lincoln Memorial as the reverse for that penny coin.
With the beginning of the Lincoln penny in 1909 was the first year that the obverse of a U.S. coin actually had the image of a real person who actually lived. The image of the 16th President of the United States would be the longest surviving obverse of any U.S. coin. That penny was taken out of production in 2025, making its 116 year longivity the record for a U.S. coin.
1958 was a landmark year for the Lincoln penny because of the change in the design of the reverse. This reverse would again change to the shield reverse which was introduced in 2010 and would run to 2025 (the end of the series).
The remaining four coins in the set did not experience any major design changes. In 1964 the Franklin Half Dollar would give way to a coin with the likeness of John Kennedy on the obverse, and the Roosevelt dime has remained pretty much the same since 1946. Both the Jefferson Nickel (2005) and Washington Quarter (2022 plus the Statehood Quarters) would undergo design changes but both in the next century.
