The image accompanying this set is that of Vol. I, No. 1 of the Numismatic News. It made its debut on October 13, 1952. Its founding editor was Chester L. Krause of Iola, Wisconsin. This publication is now in its 73 year serving the coin collecting community.
1952 was a notable year for many reasons. Mr. Potato Head, the toy, was first marketed, the microwave oven was invented, Dwight Eisenhower was elected President, the Korean War was dragging on into its second year, and the Yankees beat the Dodgers in seven games to win the World Series. Given the perspective of time, however, the greatest scientific accomplishmentof the year was Jonas Salk's vaccine against polio. Polio struck hardest among the young crippeling them and even killing them. 1952, the year the vaccine was invented, more than 3000 people died from the disease with another 25,000 being crippled. It was a serious public health crisis.
1952 was a year where the mint struck pennies (Lincoln), nickels (Jefferson), dimes (Roosevelt), quarters (Washington) and half dollars (Ben Franklin). The obverse of all of our business struck coins were Presidents, save one and the one of the largest demonination was graced by Benjamin Franklin. In ten years (1962) John Kennedy would take office as President of the United States and a year and ten months later die at the hand of Lee Harvey Oswald. The following year Kennedy's image would replace Franklin's on the obverse of our half dollars.
Accordingly, if you are a coin collector and a history buff, you need to have a mint state for 1952. Giving it some thought, there are some pretty strong arguments for each of the years in the decade to have a mint set, and perhaps if my ambition and finances hold out, I may just do that.
