The image to the left may look familiar. It is Anthony de Francisci's design. However, on closer inspection you'll see some significant differences. On the obverse, you'll see the date is "1918" not 1921 -- for the first in series that was high relief. Looking at the reverse, you'll find the eagle is standing, not on a laurel, but on a broken sword. That's not our beloved peace dollar, it just looks like it.
The broken sword reverse design was controversial and Warren G. Harding was having none of it. The broken sword was eliminated from de Francisci's design. Wormser, then ANA President, noted that the political interference resulted in a coin that had no imagery of peace, save the word itself located under the Eagle on the little hill upon which he roosted. Peace Dollar, well it started that way.
I started a set for 1921 so I could tell that story and present that image; in part. 1921 was the year they started striking silver dollars again. The Morgan dollar series stopped in 1921 and was later replaced with the Peace Dollar that same year. It was the year the Silver Dollar died, but was cooler heads prevailed and it was ressurected.
This set has some iconic coins. The buffalo nickel, the wheat penny, both the Morgan and Peace dollar, the Standing Liberty quarter, Walking Liberty Half Dollar, and the Mercury dime. It was also one of the waining years in the double eagle series of St. Gauden's design. Just the coins that were being struck this year literally requires consideration of keeping a set of these coins. The temptation was too great so in November of 2025 I started this set, I will make it competitive, and keep it so.
The 1921 St. Gaudens Double Eagle had a mintage of just 528,000 coins. While very rare, this coin is no place close to the rarest in that series. Even so, I would be fortunate to find a specimen within my meager ability to pay; therefore I have limited anticipation that this set will ever be completed -- although I will if I get lucky! Frankly, I'm sort of pleased with myself that I have silver dollars MS 65 or better for this year spanning both the Morgan and Peace dollar.
As of this moment this was the last set I started and probably will be my last thrust into attempted bankruptcy due to my hobby. I haven't told my wife, she would be way too happy to hear it.
