I was five years old in 1954, and most of my first conscious memories come from that year. I remember my Dad's Army surplus Jeep pickup truck he couldn't get parts to repair the thing, that's why the gas tank had so much chewing gum on it, that the seat covers were old carpeting, and the one windshield wiper didn't work most of the time -- it was run from a vacuum line and sometimes Dad would find a length of hose just the right length to get it running again, but alas it would only last a couple of months, and the sun would bake it brittle and it would break. The Jeep had nothing resembling a heater or a radio (transistors were still in the future). I remember my parents first new car, a 1954 Chevrolet with four doors and a radio. It was blue and white with lots of chrome, I actually remember all that. (the image is the spitting image of their car, but the picture is not) I also remember Dad giving me a shining dime when we to town shopping one Saturday morning, and I never thought I saw anything as shiny as that dime except the chrome on that new car. For years Dad reminded me of my having asked him it that dime was chromed like the bumpers on the new car -- which somehow amused him. I think that's also my first memory of coins. I don't know if that was a 1954 Roosevelt, but it looked new and had its mint luster, although then I didn't know that's why it was so bright and white. Perhaps that's why I got into coin collecting, I don't really know for sure -- but it wouldn't surprise me.
