November 11, 1918 (the Eleventh hour, of the Eleventh Day, of the Eleventh Month) World War I ended. There are monuments to American sacrifice during the "Great War" to be found in abundance. The image to the left, is the Memorial and American graveyard at Verdun in France. My Mother's brother was gased there and survived, I remember him as a pleasant old guy who never spoke of the war and had a hard time getting around. I guess that's why the few coins I had with a date of 1918 is turning into a set; in memory of my Uncle Ferd, who I only remember from childhood and never really knew.
The time I spent in Europe left an impression on me concerning these events. Every little German village has a war memorial, generally in rememberance of World War I, a few for the Franco-Prussian War, and I don't remember seeing many for World War II. I was also amazed by how many American soldiers are buried in France -- this cemetary is just one of many.
This set has a way to go to be completed.
