America had earned her independence, and the frontier was seemingly endless. A century began with exploration and adventure; though saturated with conflict.
Lewis and Clark ventured into the unsettled west, and the War of 1812 would yield our National Anthem. Battles raged, and discoveries continued. If I could only select one word to describe the 1800’s, it would be, PERSEVERANCE.
Simply, the price for land out west was, well, showing up. But showing up for a claim required a level of tribulation that few others could fathom. Exposure, wildlife, and illnesses, were just a few of the perils that plagued those expeditions who dared take on the Oregon Trail. Prior to the railroads, the journey would wipe out entire families as they pushed forward by up to twenty miles a day on foot. The common paradigm is that families would just sit in the wagons, and get hauled out by the oxen.
However, the wagons were more like modern-day U-Haul’s; packed full of belongings and supplies. You would have been doing just as much walking as your livestock.
Furthermore, though an independent nation, the strife for freedom of all would continue into the century that followed. From slavery to oppressed workforces; from indigenous people to women’s suffrage; the United States had far to go before being truly unified.
Nevertheless, I love my country. Flaws, virtues, lessons learned, and lessons that still need learning, are all part of the New World.
Not having all of the answers does not make me any less proud of my country. And not having all of the designs does not make me any less happy with what I’ve brought together to display here: the fantastic art & endurance that so greatly represents my growing America the Beautiful.
