The year 1968 is remembered in the history books as a time of war and political upheaval. The Vietnam War was still raging in full fury, Robert Kennedy and Martin Luther King met tragic deaths, and many of our cities were troubled with protests or riots.
Despite all the changes and upheaval in our world, many of us baby boomers were young enough to be far removed from these events. Although I myself would find myself serving with the military overseas in less than a decade, I can recall the year 1968 with fondness and nostalgia. My classmates and I were still young enough to be relatively free and unaffected by current events and national politics. We still spent our summer vactiions playing around the neighborhood and visiting the local swimming pool. Those were the days when kids still rode their bicycles and played outdoors until the street ljghts came on. Ah, those were the days.
Many from previous generations had not passed from the scene yet. My World War 1 veteran grandfather was still a positive influence on me. I wonder what Grandad would say about today's state of affairs. I'm think I know what he would say, and I say the same thing .And most of the World War 2 generation were still with us. We now call them the "Greatest Generation" and they were worthy of the title.
Life , with all it's changes , goes on. Some of us would gladly go back to those days in time. Coin collecting often reminds me of days gone by. I still say the girls were prettier, the cars were cooler and the popular music was far better in those days.
