The first parkng meter was installed in Oklahoma City on July 16, 1935; and yes it was coin operated. The parking meter was a way to ration space to leave your car, and remember Oklahoma City, even today, is the largest city in the US by land mass. Parking was an issue downtown, so up went the rationing devices. There's no reason for me to know that, except I had business downtown and I ran into a guy I had known in the Service and we were chatting and watching a parking control officer ticket cars. He was a history buff and told me the story of the parking meter -- upon visiting the Cowboy Museum some years later a docent confirmed the parking meter story -- and I never forgot it. For us interested in collecting coins, these were the first mechanical coin collectors of their kind -- I guess we have something in common with machines already.
1935 was a watershed year, the National Labor Relations Act was passed into law, and was found Constitutional in 1937 in the Jones & Laughlin Steel decision. Probably the most important legislation in the whole of the New Deal, with the possible exception of Social Security. Most economists are convinced that the collective bargaining that gained a strong foot hold after this Act was in large measure responsible for ending the Great Depression.
Amelia Earhart (from Atcheson, Kansas) did her flight from Hawaii to California that year brining her to national attention. Also in avaiation news was the trial of the century was Bruno Hauptmann being tried for the Lindberg kidnapping. In 1935 the Detroit Tigers won the World Series avenging their defeat at the hands of the Cardinals the year before.
Finally, on a lighter note, 1935 was the debute of Porky the Pig. The rather witless anti-hero that Bugs Bunny spent much of his time plotting against. 1935 was also the last year for the Peace Dollar, in my opinion, a truly sad event.
The last two years for the Peace Dollar was this one and 1934. This set also started in October of 2024.
