A privy mark is any symbol, letter or unique device added to an existing coin design. A privy mark offers a mint a chance to add a device to a coin for the purpose of commemorating an event or a status without changing its existing design elements. Many world mints have been adding privy marks to coins for years.
The scope of this set refers to modern US Eagle coins, however, there have been privy marks in certain classic issues. If we take the definition of a privy mark to mean: 1) not a mint mark, 2) not a mint error, 3) not part of a series, and 4) not included on all mintage for a coin in a given year, there were only a select few minted previously by the US Mint. The commemorative half dollar series included privy marks on certain 1921 Alabama Centennial (2x2), 1921 Missouri Centennial (2*4), and 1922 Grant Memorial (*) coins. Going back farther, one could argue that the initials VDB on some 1909 Lincoln cents also represented a form of a privy mark. More recently, privy marks were added as part of a limited mintage within the 2024 Flowing hair gold coins and silver medals, which were both huge hits.
The US Mint is onboard with this recent global trend starting in 2020 with the V75 privy on these silver eagles, proof gold eagles and 5 NPS quarters commemorating the end of World War II. Subsequent new offerings in 2024 and again in 2025 indicate there are more to come for this series. Proof versions of the silver eagle with Army, Navy and Marines privies will be dropping later this year. A laser beam privy eagle just dropped on the website for August release.
