1893 was the year of the Columbian Exposition in Chicago. Perhaps of greater significance was the Panic of 1893 which touched off a Depression lasting until 1897. Wheat crop failures in the US and a failed Coup in Argentina resulted in financial panic, and again, paper money fell out of favor and gold, in particular, was being hoarded in this country and in Europe. Silver was also in short supply due to hoarding, and that is reflected in the prices of silver coins due to their low mintage. (An 1893 s Morgan Dollar graded in MS 67 is a retirement plan).
The image to the left is of a happier aspect of the year; and is the same likeness found on one of the commemorative half dollars for the same event, Christopher Columbus.
This set was begun on October 17, 2024.
