One of the most interesting times at the US Mint. B.F. Peale returned from Europe with new refining and minting techniques. Reduction lathes, toggle presses and steam power all made their way into minting operations. We went from hand punching individual dentils to having a jig and semi-automated system around 1836.
Two branch mints opened up in 1838 producing half and quarter eagles. Imagine the challenge of setting up the assaying and coining machinery in what was then remote towns of Charlotte and Dahlonega
Samuel Moore's design ideas for the half eagle along with William Kneass' engraving skills produced an amazing coin, regardless of what R.M. Patterson said about the eagle on the reverse.
Collecting this set is incredibly fun, especially with so many die varieties. Check back for more updates as I learn more about this great era at the US Mint
