Augustus St. Gaudens was known as a master designer of coins. His designs for many of our gold coins were iconic. Among those gold coins for which he was famous is the Indian gold quarter eagles, which comprise this fledgling set.
The image to the left is Rudolph Ruzicka's portrait of the coin designer done in 1907. I think this image does the designer justice and it has esthetic appeal just like St. Guadens' coins.
St. Guadens was an Irish born artist who was raised in the United States. Perhaps his best know work outside of his coin designs is the Robert Gould Shaw Memorial on Boston Commons. Colonel Shaw is cast in bronze leading his 54th Massachusetts infantry into battle. The movie "Glory" was about this regiment and its contributions to the Union war effort.
St. Gaudens is perhaps the preeminent sculptor of his time in the United States. The book by Burke Wilkinson, "The Life and Works of Augustus St. Gaudens" Dover Publishing, 1992 is a most read for anyone interested in his work.
I started this set on September 6, 2024.
