The Indian Head or Buffalo nickel is from the renaissance of American coin designing. James Earle Fraser is the designer of this coin. It is his image presented here. The Buffalo Nickel, objectively, is the most beautiful of our nickels. The shield nickel, bless its heart, has to be one of, if not the, ugliest coin we ever minted. I wonder if it was this ugly-duckling nickel Teddy Roosevelt had in mind when he commanded that we do something to make our coinage more esthetically pleasing.
James Earle Frazier was an American sculptor from Minnesota. One of his most famous works is a mounted Indian on visibly worn out horse, entitled "End of Trail." It was a work in plaster and was displayed outdoors in Visalia, California and had not weathered well. The Cowboy Museum in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma purchased it, restored it and has it displayed in the main lobby as you enter the building.
As it turns out the Cowboy Museum is at 1200 NE 63rd Street in Oklahoma City and just down the road a piece at 1126 NE 63rd Street is the County Line Resturant -- my favorite BBQ ribs on the whole planet. It used to be my second favorite but the Calico Inn in Riley, Kansas had its proprietor retire and she was the very best at ribs. Ribs and coins; a good combination!
I started this set on September 9, 2024.
