The Depression continued through this year and recovery wasn't until two years later. Alfred Nobel, arranged in his will to fund the Nobel Prize in Peace, Literature, and the Sciences. The first prize was awarded in 1901 after Alfred's passing. The first prize in Economics, funded by the Riksbank, was awarded in 1969. Seems fitting that a set should be gathered in honor of this event. They give you a certificate, this medal, and it is gold, and 11 million kroner, tax free in the United States.
Alfred Nobel's story is a fascinating one. Kenne Fant wrote a biography of the man in 1993 which was originally published in Sweden and has been translated and published in the U.S. by Arcade Publishing. The title of the book is "Nobel: the Man." You might actually conclude that the Nobel Prizes were a matter of a guilty conscience -- he made his fortune in explosives.
I've actually met several of the Nobel Laurrates in Economics. Gary Becker and Milton Friedman from the University of Chicago, Paul Krugman from Princeton, and Sir Clive W.J. Granger from the University of California San Diego. At our University we have to have outside reviewers for our cases for tenure and for promotion. In my wife's cases for promotion to Associate Professor and for Tenure and for Full Professor her outside reviewer was Clive Granger -- he actually took her to dinner once when she was in San Diego for the Western Economics Association Annual meetings. In each case, these people were gracious and very down to earth. I heard Paul Samuelson give a speech one time in which he discussed his childhood in Gary, Indiana and the challenges that presented until he moved to Chicago, and did his undergraduate at the University of Chicago. Alex Karras (Mongo in Blazing Saddles) and Micheal Jackson aren't the only people from Gary!
I started this set in August of 2025.
