As my first completed Registry type set, this was a thrill to put together. I started with very few examples of this general design, none of which had qualifying certifications.
Before knowing this set existed, I excitedly added my current half dime. More details for that event are elaborated in the individual comments description for that coin. About a month later, I wanted to impress one of my co-workers by having him watch me purchase my twenty-cent piece online. For certified examples, those were then my two.
After sending three Seated coins off to PCGS summer camp, I received my current F-15 dime; accompanied by a details quarter for environmental damage, and a details Trade for cleaning.
Though quite a mess, my set was coming together. I now had the MS-61 half dime, the F-15 dime, an environmentally damaged quarter, my VF-35 twenty-cents, an ANACS VF-20 half dollar that remained invisible to the public, and my cleaned Trade.
Then, all that I was missing was that Seated dollar; the cost of which would eclipse the entirety of the rest of the set. I wanted a nice example with a mintage of less than a million.
For my budget, I was asking quite a bit of myself. I couldn’t get a particular image out of my head: that of my current Seated dollar, which was camping out on my watchlist. A few overtime shifts, several meals at home, and plenty of discipline to retain savings later, and I was able to make it happen. Type coin or not, I’m very proud of my 1870.
With that, I had a complete set. I budgeted quite a bit from there, ultimately grooving in accepted grades for each series. This was quite a challenge, and I sincerely hope you enjoy the finished product.
