Birthyear set for my step-father, Choya. He didn't raise me. We met in the fall of 2004, at the start of my senior year of high school.
It was the night of open house at the High School. He'd recently moved back into town with his oldest son starting at the same high school I went to as a freshman. He and my mother - who had been sweethearts all the way back to kindergarten - found each other in the halls and recognized each other instantly.
He's been a great father figure for me over the years and I love and respect him greatly.
Building this collection of mint sets (1932, 1955, 1956, 1958, 1965 SMS, 1981, 1982, 1983, 1986, 1989, 1990, 1992, 1993) was his plan / vision in 2008, after the passing of his mother. I’d started participating in the registry and buying graded coins in 2007. Seeing what I was doing here was part of how he got the idea to build the sets with graded coins instead of raw ones. He didn’t really have the time to handle the online registry side of things so I took that up, building the sets online, taking the best pictures that I could and presenting the sets on the registry.
We spent months that year (2008) doing the work to build and establish these sets. We went to coin shows together, shopped online - on eBay and beyond - searched through mint sets we bought together to find coins to submit... It was a great bonding experience for us and remains one of my fondest memories with him. We both knew before this that coin collecting and photography were interests we shared. Bu building these set was a much bigger deal / experience than just talking about coins together – although I’ve always loved talking his ear off about this stuff. It was very gratifying to help him build something to honor his mother that would also hopefully become a legacy to the family.
By 2009 and 2010 most of these sets had been mostly filled out and work to expend or upgrade the slowed drastically as I finished my B.Sc. and moved to start grad school. Even so, about 10 years later, we still talk about these sets and that summer and, every once in a while, we pick up a new coin or an upgrade for one of the sets. Some days I really miss days like that summer, when we could just spend all day talking about and looking at coins, when I wasn’t a father myself and things weren’t nearly so complicated.
