The building to the left is the Old San Fransciso Mint. The Granite Lady, built in 1874. That building survived the 1906 earth quake and subsequent fire in San Francisco, hence the nickname. The set below are Morgan Dollars that were struck there.
The San Francisco Morgan dollar series includes some special coins. The lowest mintage coin in the entire series was the 1893 s, with only 100,000 struck. The 1895 s was the fifth lowest mintage with only 400,000 struck. We are not sure how many of these coins survived the Pittman Act and the melting of silver dollars.
As one can readily see the story of the "s" mint mark Morgans is one of survival, the mint made it through 1906 (a year when no Morgan Dollars were being struck) and the Pittman Act.
I began this registry set on June 5, 2024, the 54th anniversary of my coming home after my active duty in the Army.
