Farran Zerbe proposed a coin in honor of the end of the First World War, his proposal was taken seriously because he was President of ANA and a coin collector, perhaps a little more well known and perhaps more persuasive than the rest of us, but a coin collector none the less.
As most people aware of the history of the silver dollar know, the Mint stopped the Morgan dollar in 1904. Then Congress passed the Pittman Act that resulted in dollar coins being melted to strike fractional coins and to sell bullion. The result was the demand for dollar coins outpaced the supply and so the Mint restarted the Morgan in 1921 while a movement want a dollar coin to honor the end of World War I. Hence, we got the Peace Dollar, without the Eagle standing on a broken sword and almost no imagery that would suggest Peace was being celebrated. I guess I like the Zerbe part of the story better.
