Morgan and Peace dollars are the core of the numismatic community. Arguably, these two series represent the most popular segments of coin collecting. Morgan dollars were originally produced 1878 through 1921 and Peace dollars were produced from 1921 to 1935. These new coin series, starting in 2021, were created on the 100th anniversary of the junction of the two that occurred in 1921, when both issues were produced.
Fast forward to 2021, and improved minting technologies such as hub designing using computer modeling and manufacturing with CNC machining is being used to offer accurate reproductions of the past coins. This is our opportunity to collect the "70s" that never existed before when the coins were mechanically produced for general commerce, dumped into cloth bags and shipped across country in trains.
There are differences between the old and new issues. Original Morgans and Peace were 90% silver and 0.77 troy ounces while the newest versions are 99.9% silver and 0.86 troy ounces. They remain the same dimensions.
Two of the original mints that produced Morgans in the past, Carson City and New Orleans, have since been closed. The US Mint offered classic CC and O versions for 2021, but in the form of privy marks that were minted in Philadelphia.
