In 2018, the iconic fast food restaurant, McDonald's, celebrated the 50th anniversary of its flagship sandwich, the Big Mac. Originally developed by a franchisee in Pittsburgh, this sandwich was spread nationwide in just one year, quickly becoming a permanent part of the menu.
These coins were struck in Cincinnati by Osborne Coinage to celebrate this anniversary. Among five different varieties, one for each decade, there were a total of 6.2 million struck. The coins were exchanged for a free Big Mac at any McDonald's restaurant around the world throughout 2018.
