In 1916, the U.S. Mint sought to revamp its coinage as part of a wider movement to elevate American coin art. The Barber Half Dollar (1892–1915) was considered stale, prompting a redesign. Adolph A. Weinman’s timeless design depicts Lady Liberty striding toward the dawn, draped in an American Flag on the obverse and a majestic eagle perched on a mountain branch on the reverse. It graced 65 different date and mint mark combinations from 1916-1947 before being replaced in 1948 by the new Franklin half dollar. Though the design would eventually be revived when the American Silver Eagle began being produced in 1986.
The set has immense historical significance as it was minted through World War I, the Roaring Twenties, the Great Depression, and World War II, the coin represents an enduring symbol of American resilience and ideals.
Key Dates: 1916-S, 1919-D, 1919-S, 1921, 1921-D, 1921-S, 1938-D
