This set is dedicated to the person who got me interested in coin collecting, my grandmother, and is still a work in progress.
Some of my most cherished memories are visits to my grandparents (mothers side) and the opportunity to lay across their bed with all my grandmothers' blue Whitman coin folders spread out before me.
My "grandma" went through every single coin she got in change looking for the missing keys to her circulated coin collection. She went so far as to have two change purses in her bag. One pocket for unchecked coins and one for "spending coins". In the 50's & 60's she had managed to accrue nearly complete sets of every circulating coinage available just by checking her change. And when she finally found one that she needed, she saved it and let "me" put it in it's appropriate folder the next time I visited.
I'll never forget those days as a young boy just looking at all those folders (cents, nickels, dimes, quarters, halves) and thinking how rich my grandma was. And when she did pass, she left them for me.
I still have them, all empty spots have since been filled, and at nearly 70 yeas old I still spread them out on the bed to marvel upon them. What a great childhood I had. After I finished filling the circulated sets, I started over with uncirculated (MS - graded) sets. I still to this day have an affinity for standard late 20th century circulating coinage.
My advice, share your collection with a child. You just never know how deeply it will affect them. I know I'm glad my grandmother took the time. Still miss you grandma!
