A collection of mid-mint state grade pieces, which is the sweet spot between quality and price. My aim is to collect pieces that have the look of gems without spending the ridculous money for dipped blast white coins of a higher grade. Many of these pieces were purchased years ago, and are conservatively graded in old holders. A few would actually grade MS65 today.
I refuse to waste ridiculous money on a mint state 1880. I am substituting a proof, and with many of the coins from this date it is very hard to tell the difference. Some pieces identified as MS coins are proofs anyway.
My proof 1877, and especially my 1878 would be hard to tell apart from business strikes if they existed for these two dates.
