Over the past decade, my goal has been to collect the complete silver kilo panda series from 1998 to the present in the highest grade possible. The kilo panda is an iconic coin due to the imagery of a cute, playful panda and its robust size.
As a bit of history, in 1982 the China Mint struck the coin in pure gold to draw attention to the Chinese panda as an endangered species. The first silver panda coins were issued 1983 and the design of the panda is changed every year (except for 2001 and 2002) and minted in different sizes and denominations over the years. The center of the obverse is a depiction of The Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests located in the Temple of Heaven complex in Beijing. The Hall was built between 1406 and 1420, and the Chinese characters on top mean the People's Republic of China and the bottom year of issue. The reverse shows portraits of the giant panda or pandas in various outdoor venues commonly with bamboo.
In 1998, the kilo panda silver coin was introduced to the series and exactly 1,998 were produced that year. 1,999 one kilo coins were produced in 1999, and 2,000 were produced in 2000 (and 2001). Production quantities were then capped at 4,000 from 2002-2010, then 8,000 in 2011, and then at various levels between 10,000-20,000 from 2012 to present.
Chinese silver pandas do not carry mintmarks even though there are multiple mint locations (Shanghai, Shenyang, and Shenzhen). Having these coins produced at various mints sometimes results in slight variations on the coins which is of keen interest to collectors. Starting in 2019, it was possible to obtain kilo panda silver coins (first day of issue) with a label hand-signed by the panda designer at Shenzhen (Z) or Shenyang (Y) mints.
